Decisions to be made

It’s Saturday here in Provo. The semester has started again. And I am anxious to see where it will take me. Or perhaps that statement should be changed to ‘I am anxious to go places with it?’ I think it will probably be a little bit of both. After all, the last year took me pretty far. Why shouldn’t this year?

One year ago I was starting the Junior core of the Applied Math program. My foot was in a boot, my bike rim had recently broken, my finger was swollen, and the workload that had just begun was not easy. So in case the picture hasn’t been illustrated clearly, things were not easy. I looked back in my journal expecting to see some great reflection of what I thought during this time. What did I find? Quotes like “I’m grateful to be back in school and gain more knowledge.”, “Today was tough, but I’m just building momentum”, “I worked on that assignment for quite a while, built some good intellectual momentum”, “MY FINGER IS HURTING SO BAD. IT STINKS!”, “So I’m ending today grateful. It was a good day. PLENTY of math, also a good time with friends.”

I didn’t see starting ACME as some historic event, it was just learning more math. I believe from the outside looking in, there are so many problems that we face or have that seem to be SO large and SO important. But in reality, we just live on a spinning rock. These are spinning rock problems, I would recommend not getting hung up on them. But focus instead on what is most important. As a God-fearing follower of Jesus Christ, I would call these the things of eternal significance. Now, I’m not saying that I’m perfect at this (in fact I would say I need to work on it more). But I would say that seeking to put things of eternal significance first has helped me in my life up to this point.

There are a lot of decisions to be made. What will I do with my life? What will I do for my work? Who will I spend time with? Who will I date? Who will I marry? (I do certainly want to get married). I do hope that when making these decisions, I don’t let spinning rock problems stunt my eternal progress.
